Former Colonia Dignidad leaders surrender to justice to serve sentences

This Tuesday, three of the six former leaders of Colonia Dignidad, who were part of Paul Schäfer's "iron circle" and accused of sexual abuse, rape, and kidnapping of minors, voluntarily surrendered to justice.

During the morning of this Tuesday, the visiting judge of the Talca Court of Appeals, Hernán González, arrived at the Parral Court of Letters to carry out the sentence against the main collaborators of the legendary leader of the former German colony, Paul Schäfer.

In this context, three of the six sentenced to effective prison time voluntarily surrendered to the magistrate to be notified of the execution of the sentence.

CIA training of Chilean agents during dictatorship confirmed

Santiago de Chile, April 24, 2014, Tribuna Popular TP/Credit PL.- The United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) trained Chilean agents after the 1973 coup d'état against Salvador Allende, it was confirmed here during a trial against leaders of the dictatorship (1973-1990).

Former Brigadier Pedro Espinoza, of the National Intelligence Directorate (DINA), stated that the training took place at the so-called Casa de Piedra, a mansion located in the Andean foothills that previously belonged to journalist Darío Sainte-Marie (Volpone), founder of the newspaper El Clarín and a friend of Allende.

Espinoza's statements took place during the process that concluded the day before with a four-year prison sentence for illicit association against the top leaders of the DINA and the infamous Colonia Dignidad, an enclave of homicides and torture during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet.

According to Chilean press media, the only precedent for these assertions is found in the words of the former head of the DINA, Manuel Contreras—who faces long sentences and was also tried in this case—who admitted in an interview that eight CIA officers trained his people in mid-1974.

The Chilean digital outlet El Mostrador highlighted the "great symbolism for the Chilean left" that the place chosen for this training held, not only because of the personal relationship between Volpone and Allende but also because of El Clarín's support for the Popular Unity government.

The sentence handed down by Jorge Zepeda, a special judge of the Santiago Court of Appeals, also fell upon former Colonel Fernando Gómez and upon Kurt Schnellemkamp, Gerd Seewald, Gerhard Mücke, and Karl van Den Berg Schuurman, collaborators of the late leader of Colonia Dignidad, Paul Schäfer.

Rebeca Schaefer Schneider, Peter Schmidt Spinti, Matthias Gerlach Maschke, and Friedhelm Zeitner Bohnau were acquitted.

According to official reports, some 3,200 Chileans died during the dictatorship, of whom nearly 1,200 remain forcibly disappeared; meanwhile, some 33,000 citizens were subjected to political imprisonment and torture.
