Sergio Rolando Vega Salazar died that day at 10:00 hours, at the Hospital de San Bernardo, due to three complicated thoracic and thoraco-abdominal gunshot wounds, as recorded in the Medical Death Certificate from the Legal Medical Institute. The Autopsy Report adds that the shots were homicidal in nature and that he presented another gunshot wound on his left forearm.
According to statements from his family members, Sergio Vega was performing his Mandatory Military Service at the Infantry School of the Ejército in San Bernardo. Regarding the manner of his death, they were informed that he had committed suicide with an officer's weapon, which is the same conclusion reached by the Summary Administrative Investigation ordered by the Ejército.
However, the Commander of Military Institutes of the Infantry School of San Bernardo issued a resolution in which he indicated that he did not agree with the conclusions of the Director of that School nor with those of the Prosecutor who investigated the events, regarding the claim that the deceased had committed suicide.
His father was able to see his son's body at the Legal Medical Institute and observed cigarette burn marks.
Considering the evidence gathered and the investigation carried out by this Corporation, the Superior Council reached the conviction that Sergio Rolando Vega Salazar was executed by State agents outside of legal process, an act constituting a human rights violation.
