Sergio Antonio Abarca Castillo died that day at 23:00 hours, at the Sótero del Río Hospital, due to thoracic trauma from a bullet with an exit wound, as recorded in the Medical Death Certificate from the Legal Medical Institute.
On June 14, 1983, a day of national protest was held, called by social and political organizations in opposition to the military government, during which several residents were killed and numerous people were wounded.
Under those circumstances, and according to press information and background provided by his family, Sergio Abarca was wounded by a projectile fired by unidentified civilians traveling in a taxi. Taken to the Sótero del Río Hospital, he passed away hours later. The events took place in the vicinity of his home, located in the 30 de Mayo neighborhood, in the commune of La Cisterna.
Considering the background information gathered and the investigation carried out by this Corporation, the Superior Council, despite not having been able to determine the status of the perpetrators as State agents, and taking into account the circumstances, the era, and the cause of death, declared Sergio Antonio Abarca Castillo a victim of the prevailing political violence.
