Segundo Arcanio Quintana Díaz died that day at 7:30 hours, at the Hospital San Juan de Dios, due to a gunshot wound to the lumbar-abdominal region, with spinal cord involvement, injury to the inferior vena cava and the small intestine, and sepsis, as certified by the Medical Death Certificate from the Legal Medical Institute.

According to information obtained from the judicial proceedings, on October 4, 1987, at approximately 22:30 hours, while Segundo Quintana was walking along Calle Cruz Piedra, in the commune of Pudahuel, he was wounded by a Carabineros officer who shot him in the back.

The officer was part of a unit from the Vigésimo Sexta Comisaría de Lo Prado, which was mobilized in an institutional bus to monitor a liquor store. After being transported to Posta Nº 3, he underwent surgery. He passed away twelve days later.

The family filed a criminal complaint with the Segunda Fiscalía Militar de Santiago. The perpetrator of the shooting was sentenced to two years in prison for the crime of unnecessary violence resulting in death, a sentence that was remitted.

Considering the evidence gathered and the investigation conducted by this Corporation, the Superior Council declared Segundo Arcanio Quintana Díaz a victim of human rights violations committed by an agent of the State who made improper use of force.
