On May 28, 1977, Ruiter Enrique CORREA ARCE died in Santiago. A communist, he worked at the time of his death as the owner of a newspaper kiosk that served as a drop-off point for the exchange of information between the external and internal leadership of his party. On the aforementioned day, he was detained by members of the DINA while heading home at noon.
His body was found several days later under the Manuel Rodríguez Bridge over the Mapocho River, a location very close to the DINA barracks on Calle Borgoño, where other bodies of individuals executed by that agency also appeared.
The press reported that he had been the victim of a hit-and-run, a version that is dismissed as no traces of blood were found in the area, although there was a profusion of it on his clothing.
This Commission has reached the conviction that Ruiter Correa died while in the custody of his captors; however, it cannot determine whether he was executed by his captors or if he committed suicide under the duress of his situation, as he had previously told his family he would do if he ever found himself in such a predicament. In either case, he was a victim of human rights violations.
