René Acevedo Espinoza died that day at 3:00 hours, at the Naval Hospital of Valparaíso, due to cardiogenic shock from an acute myocardial infarction, as recorded in the Medical Death Certificate from the Legal Medical Institute.
According to statements from his relatives, René Acevedo, a communist militant and member of the Central Unica de Trabajadores, was arrested on November 11, 1973, at his home by military personnel who raided the property following a report that a crate of weapons had been brought into the house.
He was taken to the «Coraceros» Armored Cavalry Regiment, where he was interrogated and accused of weapons possession. On the 14th, his spouse was informed that he had been transferred to the Hospital de Playa Ancha, where he passed away. His remains were handed over to his relatives, who observed that his face was deformed and bandaged.
By virtue of the evidence gathered and the investigation conducted by this Corporation, the Superior Council reached the conviction that the torture to which he was subjected by State agents during his detention at a military unit decisively influenced the death of René Acevedo Espinoza. Consequently, it declared him a victim of human rights violations.
