On November 11, 1977, Spanish citizen Enrique LOPEZ OLMEDO, an alternate member of the Political Commission of the MIR, passed away. He had been detained at the end of October 1977 in Valparaíso.
It was officially stated that on that day, at 10:00 PM, while security personnel from the Navy were attempting to arrest him at the intersection of Pacífico and Coronel Silva Vergara streets in Valparaíso on suspicion of clandestine activities, he resisted, forcing the officers to use their firearms. He was wounded and died while being transported to a medical center.
The Commission, considering the victim's political affiliation, his prior detention, and the imprecision of the official statement, as well as the fact that even if his resistance to arrest had been real, it would not have justified his killing, has reached the conviction that Enrique LOPEZ was executed by state agents in violation of his human rights.
