Case summary
Miguel Ángel Núñez Valenzuela, a 23-year-old folk singer, was forcibly disappeared days after the 1973 military coup. Miguel Angel Núñez Valenzuela died that day at 11:00 hours, at kilometer 11 of the Carretera Panamericana Norte, due to gunshot wounds to the abdomen and cranium with projectile exit, as certified by the Medical Death Certificate from the Instituto Médico Legal.
During the investigation conducted by the Twenty-Second Criminal Court of Santiago regarding illegal burials in Patio Nº29 of the Cementerio General de Santiago, his family learned that he had died. According to reports, they had lost contact with him in the days following September 11, 1973, when he left his home located in the población El Cortijo in the commune of Conchalí.
Although the investigation conducted by this Corporation could not precisely determine the circumstances of his death, the Superior Council, considering the date, cause, and place of death of Miguel Angel Núñez Valenzuela, declared him a victim of the political violence prevailing at the time of his death.*
*Subsequent to the qualification of this case, on September 9, 1994, the aforementioned judicial investigation corroborated that Autopsy Protocol Nº3586/73 belonged to Miguel Angel Nuñez Valenzuela and ordered the release of his remains to his family members.
