On September 20, 1973, Manuel MALDONADO MIRANDA, 43 years old, a peasant farmer and President of the "El Esfuerzo Campesino" settlement at the former Santa Inés de Lampa estate, was killed. On the morning of September 18, he was detained along with his son by a military patrol from the Peldehue Paratrooper and Special Forces Regiment.

He was taken to the barracks of that military unit. Subsequently, his lifeless body was found on a public road and sent to the Legal Medical Institute, where it was identified by his family. According to the autopsy report, he presented multiple gunshot wounds to the cranium, thorax, and abdomen, with death having occurred on September 20.

This Commission reached the conviction that Manuel Maldonado was a victim of a human rights violation, consisting of his execution without prior trial, attributable to state agents, based on the following considerations:

-The detention of the victim at the Peldehue Paratrooper and Special Forces Regiment is corroborated by the merit of multiple testimonies received by this Commission. -His status as a peasant leader, as evidenced by other deaths during that period, made him a target for actions infringing upon his rights. -The multiple gunshot wounds recorded on his body indicate that his death was the result of an execution similar to those carried out at the same facility in other cases reported to this Commission. -The brief period of time that elapsed between his detention and his death is insufficient for any type of trial to have been conducted against him, of which, furthermore, there is no record whatsoever.
