Lidia Ester Veloso Meriño died that day at 23:30 hours, at her home located in Villa Ñirehuao, due to a gunshot wound to the skull, as recorded in the Medical Death Certificate signed by the forensic physician.
According to the records of the judicial proceeding initiated due to her death, on the night of May 9, 1987, at a family party, Lidia Veloso's spouse ended a political argument by striking a former Ejército officer in the face. After this incident, husband and wife returned to their home.
Around 23:00 hours, when the couple was already sleeping in their home, a civilian official of the Ejército entered the dwelling. He woke them up, identifying himself as an agent of the Central Nacional de Informaciones (CNI), while pointing a pistol at Lidia Veloso's spouse; he then fired the weapon, wounding Lidia Veloso in the head, who passed away minutes later.
In the judicial proceeding, the aggressor declared that he went to the home with the purpose of detaining and punishing Lidia Veloso's spouse, who, according to him, had uttered insulting expressions against the Ejército de Chile during the argument that had taken place hours earlier.
The aggressor was sentenced to five years and one day of *presidio mayor* for the crime of simple homicide of Lidia Veloso.
Considering the information gathered by this Corporation, the Superior Council reached the conviction that the death of Lidia Ester Veloso Meriño was the result of the irrational use of force by a State agent. For this reason, it declared her a victim of human rights violations.
