Juana del Carmen Cofré Catril, a militant of the Partido Socialista, died that day in Ñancul Alto, in the commune of Panguipulli, from a craniocerebral gunshot wound, as recorded in the Medical Death Certificate from the Legal Medical Institute.
According to information provided by her family, Juana Cofré, a secretary at the Complejo Maderero y Forestal Panguipulli, was being intensely sought by military authorities. She was forced to flee her home after September 11, 1973, after being labeled a "dangerous extremist." Her photograph was published in local newspapers alongside those of other wanted individuals.
Accompanied by her partner, she took refuge in a mountain sector known as Ñancul. There, they were taken in by local peasants. One of them provided information indicating that on October 7, she committed suicide by shooting herself in the head. Her remains were buried by her partner in the same area where the events took place.
Considering the evidence gathered and the investigation conducted by this Corporation, the Superior Council reached the conviction that the harassment to which Juana del Carmen Cofré Catril was subjected, as a result of the climate of political violence prevailing at the time of her death, was a decisive factor in her passing.
