According to information provided by his relatives, on September 12, 1973, Juan Beroíza refused to carry out an order from his superiors to fire upon a group of civilians on a public street. For this reason, he was held incommunicado at his unit. His death occurred two days later at the police facility.
The version provided to the public by police authorities and published in the press at the time stated that Beroíza Carrasco died as a result of the actions of snipers who attacked his unit. However, his spouse was informed that his death was due to an accident while handling his weapon; furthermore, she was told that she must remain under house arrest and was prevented from traveling to Rancagua to collect the body.
