Case summary
Juan Patricio Núñez Cuevas, a 19-year-old ship's boy in the Navy, died on October 13, 1973, in Valparaíso from a gunshot wound. Although the official version stated that it was an accidental discharge by another conscript, his case was classified as a victim of political violence due to the conditions of extreme tension to which inexperienced young military personnel were subjected during the dictatorship.
Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos[1]
Juan Patricio Núñez Cuevas died that day at 21:10 hours, at the Escuela de Submarinos de Valparaíso facility, due to acute anemia caused by a ruptured liver and cardiac and pulmonary perforation from a gunshot wound, with rib and left humerus fractures, according to the Death Certificate issued by the Instituto Médico Legal.
According to official information provided by the Armada, Juan Núñez died after being struck by a shot that was accidentally discharged by another trainee, while he was performing duties derived from Mandatory Military Service on the premises of that military institution.
These events occurred while a curfew was in effect.
By virtue of the evidence gathered and the investigation conducted by this Corporation, the Superior Council, notwithstanding the accidental nature of his death, considered it to be attributable to the conditions of extreme tension to which military personnel with little experience were subjected in the performance of their duties.
For this reason, it declared Juan Patricio Núñez Cuevas a victim of the political violence prevailing at the time of his death.
