On April 29, 1988, Juan de Dios HORMAZABAL NUÑEZ, 40 years old, a 2nd Sergeant of the Carabineros assigned to the 30th Radiopatrol Precinct, was killed in an attack on his life that occurred in the Comuna of Renca.
On the morning of the indicated day, the victim, in his capacity as Patrol Chief, was conducting document checks alongside other officers on individuals suspected of having participated in the burning of a public transport bus and other attacks against public transport, according to press reports.
As he proceeded to inspect two subjects, one of them pulled a pistol from the bag he was carrying and shot him directly in the thorax. The other members of the patrol returned fire, but the individuals managed to flee. As a result of the gunshot wound, Sergeant Hormazábal died at the scene from thoracic trauma caused by a bullet, as indicated by the autopsy report.
The evidence examined reveals that the death of the officer was related to the incidents that occurred that same morning, the burning of a bus, an act that likely had political motivations. Therefore, the subjects who fired upon the Carabineros officer were presumably related to said act and acted under the same pretexts.
For this reason, the Commission formed the conviction that 2nd Sergeant Juan Hormazábal was a victim of a human rights violation committed by private individuals acting for political motives.
