José Orlando Sandoval Muñoz died that day around 24:00 hours on the road to Portezuelo, due to "shock, acute anemia from a transfixing thoracic and cardiac ballistic perforation," as stated in the Autopsy Protocol and the Death Certificate.
Around 24:00 hours that day, Sandoval Muñoz, who worked as a cashier at the "Conquista Campesina" settlement, was returning home in the company of a relative. Both were intercepted by three military personnel traveling in a pickup truck, who proceeded to detain them.
On the way, near the Oro Verde settlement, Sandoval Muñoz was executed by his captors. The other detainee managed to flee, recounting what had happened to the family.
The following day, José Sandoval's body was found in the estuary of a canal, on the road to Portezuelo, in front of the aforementioned settlement.
Considering the background information gathered and the investigation carried out by this Corporation, the Superior Council reached the conviction that José Orlando Sandoval Muñoz was executed by State agents while in detention and outside of any legal process. For this reason, it declared him a victim of human rights violations.
