On May 6, 1984, José Isaías ALVAREZ MONDACA, 24 years old, a Carabineros officer serving in the Santiago Occidente Prefecture, died as a result of a confrontation.
On the evening of May 4, while a group of individuals entered the Baratísimo supermarket in the Pudahuel commune with the intent of stealing merchandise, an operational section of the Occidente Prefecture, which included the aforementioned officer, arrived at the scene.
Upon arriving at the location, the unit was repelled with gunfire, leaving the officer gravely wounded. He died two days later at the institutional hospital due to the severe injuries sustained in his cranial region.
The death certificate specifies the cause of death as: "Craniocerebral trauma due to bullets."
Having verified that the affected individual was performing his official duties, this Commission has formed the conviction that the Carabineros officer José Alvarez died as a victim of political violence.
