On December 6, 1984, José Guillermo HERRERA SERRANO, a 26-year-old 1st Corporal of the Carabineros who was serving at the Santa Adriana police station, was killed.
While Corporal Herrera was inside the station at night, heavily armed individuals attacked the building. The attack was repelled by station personnel. During this incident, the aforementioned non-commissioned officer suffered gunshot wounds to his body that caused his death while he was being transported to the Barros Luco Hospital. Other police officers were also wounded.
The autopsy report concludes that the cause of death was "thoracic, dorsal spinal, abdominal, and right upper extremity trauma caused by bullets."
The evidence analyzed allows for the assertion that the attack was directed at the Carabineros of Chile. The repetition of similar events allows for the presumption that this attack was part of a planned series of such actions.
The Commission reached the conviction that 1st Corporal of the Carabineros José Herrera was a victim of human rights violations, as he died in an attack perpetrated by private individuals acting under political pretexts.
