On October 5, 1973, in the Lago Yunge sector, Alto Palena, Chiloé, José Esaú VELASQUEZ VELASQUEZ, a 52-year-old farmer, was killed by Carabineros.
Official information labeled Velásquez Velásquez as an extremist who, it was claimed, "was sowing terror in the Continental Chiloé area, and was shot to death while attempting to assault a Carabineros corporal during his arrest in the wooded region of the place known as El Tranquilo, located 60 kilometers from Palena...
When Carabineros located him and attempted to apprehend him in a forest situated between El Tranquilo and Lago Yunge, where the extremist attempted to evade police action, Velásquez Velásquez, upon being surprised, assaulted a Carabineros corporal with a machete; the corporal, in repelling the imminent action, used his weapon and fired at him.
As a result of the impact, the extremist was killed."
However, a witness present at the scene refutes this version and states that he was killed without any provocation or aggression toward the police officers.
