Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos[1]
On September 17, 1973, José René GOMEZ VELASQUEZ, 38, a farmer, and his 17-year-old son, José Domingo GOMEZ CONCHA, a student—neither of whom had any political affiliation—were killed by a pair of carabineros from Cobquecura in their shared home.
Multiple credible and consistent witnesses testified that there was no provocation whatsoever on the part of the victims. The perpetrators of the killings forced the family members to bury them within two hours, without allowing a doctor to certify the deaths; consequently, both bodies were buried immediately in Cobquecura by the family members themselves.
Later, they were moved to the Quirihue cemetery.
The Commission formed the conviction that this was a serious case of abuse of power, possibly lacking political connotation, which constitutes a violation of human rights—specifically the right to life—for which State agents are responsible.
