Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos[1]

José de las Nieves Saavedra Vergara was detained that day at approximately 2:00 a.m. at his home on Calle Malleco, in the town of Renaico, by civilians traveling in a private vehicle while a curfew was in effect.

According to statements made by his mother and neighbors, the captors knocked on the door asking for him; he replied that he was sleeping and that they should return the next day. Immediately afterward, a thud was heard.

Meanwhile, a neighbor saw three civilians carrying him and placing him into the vehicle, which was driven by an individual dressed as a *huaso*. His mother, with whom he lived, was in the house and got up to see what had happened, verifying that the doors were open and her son was gone.

Hours later, his mother went to the Carabineros station in Renaico to ask about her son. Despite her report, the police officers did not record the incident. The following day, she was told that she should go to Angol so that the police in that town could investigate what had happened. The latter indicated that they knew nothing about the incident.

Subsequent inquiries established that in the same town of Renaico, there was another person named José Saavedra Vergara who had recognized leftist political activity, as a result of which he had to leave the country during that same period.

Considering the evidence gathered and the investigation conducted, the Superior Council reached the conviction that José de las Nieves Saavedra Vergara was detained by State agents and disappeared while being held in that status. By virtue of this, he was declared a victim of human rights violations.

Relatos de los Hechos

It was a day of reflection and dialogue, where a call was made to keep the memory alive of those who lost their lives and disappeared during the military dictatorship. ANGOL.— An emotional ceremony and pilgrimage in commemoration of September 11 was held at noon this Sunday at the Memorial for the Forcibly Disappeared and Executed of Malleco Province, located in front of the Municipal Cemetery.

The activity was convened by the Communist Party of Angol, and various social, cultural, and political forces of the commune were invited. It was a day of reflection and conversation, where each of the speakers made a call not to forget and to keep alive the memory of what happened in the country starting on September 11, a period that lasted for 17 years and ended with the return to democracy in 1990.

CALL

It was a call to continue persisting and not to forget the events that occurred during that dark period of Chile's history, so that the pain caused to thousands of families who lost their loved ones at the hands of State agents—many of whom are still missing—is not repeated.

This also takes into account those who were victims of torture, exile, and political persecution. Artistic performances were presented at the event, and the forcibly disappeared of the dictatorship in Malleco were remembered, both those whose names are written on the memorial and those who have not been registered there.

The attendees left carnations at each of the 16 places where the victims of the de facto government are identified.
