On April 18, 1986, José Daniel MURGA MEDINA, 28, a MIR leader and private employee, and Juan Antonio DIAZ CLIFF, 41, also a MIR leader who was living clandestinely in the country, died in Santiago. According to official information, they were two subversive criminals who died after clashing with security forces.
According to information provided by witnesses, the events occurred differently, in circumstances where Juan Antonio Díaz was walking along Calle Gabriel Palma and was attacked at point-blank range by CNI personnel.
Others indicate that José Murga got off the bus at San Alfonso and Tucapel, heading toward his home. Upon crossing Calle General Jarpa, they saw him stop before armed individuals in civilian clothes, raising his arms, and being gunned down by gunfire.
Autopsy reports indicate that Juan Antonio Díaz died from a right pulmonary gunshot wound that caused acute anemia, and José Daniel Murga died as a result of skeletal and visceral polytrauma caused by bullets.
Considering the evidence gathered, the Commission has reached the conviction that Juan Antonio Díaz and José Daniel Murga were followed and executed by CNI personnel, considering their deaths a human rights violation for which state agents are responsible.
