On November 5, 1983, Héctor Arturo FUENTEALBA ASCENCIO, 28 years old, a Corporal 1st Class of the Carabineros, was killed. He was assigned to the General Directorate of Carabineros, where he served as a radio operator.
On the day in question, while Corporal Fuentealba was traveling from his home to his duty station, at the intersection of Pasajes Argentina and Bizancio in the Maipú district, he was attacked with a firearm by an unidentified civilian who was accompanied by another individual.
After attacking him, they seized his service weapon and fled the scene. Seriously wounded, he was taken by ambulance to the Posta Central, where he passed away that same day.
The autopsy report concludes that the cause of death was thoraco-abdominal and left upper extremity trauma caused by bullets, with exit wounds; the deceased had sustained a total of four gunshot impacts.
Witnesses indicate that the shots fired at the non-commissioned officer were likely fired at point-blank range, giving him no opportunity to defend himself.
The Commission has formed the conviction that Corporal 1st Class Héctor Arturo Fuentealba was a victim of human rights violations, for which private individuals who killed him while acting under political motivations are responsible.
