. The visiting judge, Álvaro Mesa, handed down the final sentence for the murders of Juan Segundo Palma Arévalo and Arcenio del Carmen Saravia Fritz.

The visiting judge for human rights violation cases of the Temuco Court of Appeals, Álvaro Mesa, sentenced three former Carabineros as perpetrators of the crime of qualified homicide against Juan Segundo Palma Arévalo and Arcenio del Carmen Saravia Fritz, crimes that occurred in the commune of Carahue on October 10, 1973.

The individuals are former officers René Segundo Illesca González, Rubén Gatica Garrido, and Javier Segundo Baeza Jofré, who were sentenced to 15 years and one day of major imprisonment in its maximum degree.

According to the evidence gathered during the proceedings, Judge Mesa was able to determine that one of the victims, Juan Segundo Palma Arévalo, was detained in Carahue and taken to the police station. Meanwhile, the other victim, Arcenio del Carmen Saravia Fritz, was also detained and taken to the Carahue police station.

The sentence adds that in the early hours of October 10, 1973, a Carabineros patrol consisting of Corporal René Segundo Illesca González and Carabineros Javier Baeza Jofré and Rubén Gatica Garrido proceeded to execute the two detainees in the sector known as Villa Damas, in Carahue.

"The bodies of both deceased were transported to the morgue of the Carahue hospital in the same vehicle used by the Carabineros patrol, and were handed over to their families with the express order to be buried immediately in the local cemetery," the proceedings detailed.
