All of them died at 3:20 a.m. on that day due to asphyxiation caused by the inhalation of a toxic gas, as certified in the respective Medical Death Certificates from the Legal Medical Institute.
According to records from the judicial proceedings initiated regarding their deaths, press information from the time, and statements from their relatives, during the early hours of that day, unidentified extremists placed an explosive device at the door of a supermarket located on the ground floor of the Emporium building, where they lived in the city of Viña del Mar.
The explosion of the device caused a major fire and a large amount of smoke, which, upon rising to the upper part of the building, caused the deaths of the five individuals. Some were sleeping in their homes, and others were trapped in different parts of the building while attempting to flee the fire.
That same morning, other fires were recorded in different parts of the city, also caused by the detonation of explosive devices whose origin could not be established.
Considering the evidence gathered by this Corporation, the Superior Council reached the conviction that Patricia Angélica Arce Peters, Enrique Dante Arredondo Baez, Teresa Eujenia Ciudad Vásquez, Guillermina Inés Guzmán Muñoz, and Danilo Simón Karelovic Kirigin were victims of political violence.
