Case summary

On July 20, 1974, Daniel CACERES PEREDO, 17 years old, who had a mental disability, died.
According to the testimonies received, the victim was wounded by a military patrol in front of the Emergency Service of the Hospital de San Bernardo. Witnesses state that the victim had escaped from the medical facility, where he was being treated, and was intercepted by a military patrol who wounded him while he was already in custody.
The victim underwent surgery at the same hospital but died at 23:00 hours. The death certificate states that the cause of death was a gunshot wound.
Having verified the detention and the circumstances and cause of death, this Commission has formed the conviction that Daniel Cáceres was a victim of a political execution and the excessive use of force by State agents, without political connotation.
