On October 16, 1975, the DINA succeeded in locating the clandestine leadership of the MIR at a plot of land in Malloco, resulting in a confrontation in which Dagoberto PEREZ VARGAS, a sociologist and leader of the MIR, was killed. The Commission considers that Dagoberto Pérez died as a consequence of political violence.
Nelson Gutiérrez, second-in-command of the MIR, managed to escape the Malloco confrontation while wounded. Days later, the British physician Sheila Cassidy treated the fugitive leader, and as a result, security agents began searching for her in order to detain her.
