On October 11, 1973, Carlos Helen SALAZAR CONTRERAS, 46 years old, a lawyer and professor at the Faculty of Law of the Universidad de Chile, a member of the Partido Socialista, and a personal friend of President Salvador Allende, died.
He was detained on October 5, 1973, at his home in the presence of witnesses. The captors identified themselves as agents of the Investigaciones police.
Efforts made by his family established that Carlos Salazar had been transferred to the Estadio Nacional that same day. Through information provided by a *carabinero*, they were informed for ten days that he was in good condition.
On October 11, 1973, according to testimonies, he called upon his fellow prisoners to observe "a minute of silence for the one-month anniversary of Allende's death." He died in the Stadium that same day. The cause of death is listed as "asphyxia by hanging." According to the official version provided by the Undersecretariat of the Interior at the time, Carlos Salazar had committed suicide.
The Commission has formed the conviction that this person committed suicide because he could not endure what he was experiencing, and he is a victim of human rights violations, taking into account the conditions of his confinement.
