Carlos Gutiérrez Benavides died that day from a craniocerebral gunshot wound, as stated in the Medical Death Certificate from the Legal Medical Institute.

In 1991, as a result of the investigation by the Twenty-Second Criminal Court of Santiago into illegal burials in Section 29 of the General Cemetery of Santiago, it was determined that Carlos Gutiérrez was found dead inside the La Punta Resbalón estate in the Renca sector by carabineros from the First Renca Precinct.

His body was sent to the Legal Medical Institute as a "John Doe" (NN) and, despite having been identified through his fingerprints, he was buried as a "John Doe" (NN) in that cemetery.

Based on the evidence gathered and the investigation conducted by this Corporation, despite being unable to establish the precise circumstances of his death, given the time period and the cause, the Superior Council declared Hugo Néstor Arredondo Sánchez a victim of the prevailing political violence.*

*Subsequent to the classification of this case, on May 3, 1995, in the aforementioned investigation, after it was corroborated that Autopsy Protocol No. 2794/73 corresponded to Carlos Gutiérrez Benavides, it was ordered that his remains be delivered to his family members.
