Case summary
Bella Aurora Sepúlveda Valenzuela, a 62-year-old housewife, was executed by State agents on October 17, 1974, in the town of San Gregorio. Bella Aurora Sepúlveda Valenzuela died that day at 18:00 hours, in San Gregorio, commune of Ñiquén, due to acute anemia caused by a gunshot wound, as certified by the Death Certificate.
According to statements from surviving witnesses, at approximately 15:00 hours on the day in question, a group of carabineros arrived at the home of Bella Aurora Sepúlveda to arrest a common criminal who was at the location at that time.
A shootout ensued in which two uniformed officers were killed, while the criminal managed to escape. Bella Aurora Sepúlveda, who had taken refuge with her family in a neighboring house, was taken out of there by a carabinero to be brought back to her home, at which moment she was shot. She remained in agony throughout the night, without receiving aid.
The following day, her body and those of the deceased carabineros were removed in a truck. She was buried by order of the Military Prosecutor's Office of San Carlos in the San Gregorio Cemetery, as recorded in the respective death certificate. Her relatives managed to locate her remains one year later.
In the search for the aforementioned criminal, seven other people were detained, who currently hold the status of forcibly disappeared; among them, Benedicto de la Rosa Sepúlveda Valenzuela and José Apolinario Muñoz Sepúlveda, who were classified as victims of human rights violations by the National Commission for Truth and Reconciliation.
Considering the evidence gathered and the investigation conducted by this Corporation, the Superior Council reached the conviction that Bella Aurora Sepúlveda Valenzuela was executed outside of any legal process by State agents, which constitutes a human rights violation.
