Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos[1]
On October 20, 1973, several arrests were carried out at the Huiticalán, Patagual, and Vínculo settlements in Paine.
The operation was executed by personnel belonging to the San Bernardo Infantry Regiment, who, on the morning of that day, traveled through the aforementioned locations, arresting the following individuals:
Santos Pascual CALDERON SALDAÑA, 28 years old, married, farmer, Socialist Party militant;
Benjamín Adolfo CAMUS SILVA, married, farmer;
Rolando Anastasio DONAIRE RODRIGUEZ, 49 years old, married, farmer, no political affiliation;
Luis Osvaldo GONZALEZ MONDACA, 32 years old, married, farmer, no political affiliation;
Pedro MENESES BRITO, 30 years old, single, farmer, Socialist Party militant; and
Bautista Segundo OYARZO TORRES, 52 years old, married, agricultural worker.
The first to be arrested was Benjamín Camus, at the moment he was going to take animals to the Cerro. Following this, the military personnel headed to the offices of the Huiticalán settlement, where they arrested Osvaldo González and Juan Oyarzo. Around 10:00 hours, Pascual Calderón was arrested on the road.
From the El Patagual settlement, Rolando Anastasio Donaire Rodríguez was arrested. The detainees were gathered at a field in the town of Pintué. At 17:00 hours, the detainees were loaded onto military trucks and taken in the direction of Cuesta el Cepillo.
Finally, the following day, Pedro Meneses Brito, President of the settlement, was arrested at the El Vínculo settlement.
From that moment on, their families were unable to obtain information regarding the whereabouts of the victims. In the month of November 1973, they learned through the Legal Medical Service that all of them had been sent to that location and buried in Patio 29 of the General Cemetery. Their relatives arranged for their transfer to the Aculeo Cemetery.
Their death certificates indicate the date of death as October 23, 1973, at 10:00 hours at the Maipo Bridge, and the cause of death as gunshot wounds.
The background information provided allows this Commission to reach the conviction that the victims were executed three days after their arrest, while they were in the custody of State agents, and their bodies were abandoned on the slopes of the Maipo Bridge, to be subsequently transported by Carabineros personnel to the Legal Medical Institute; their deaths constitute human rights violations for which State agents are responsible.
