Angel Román Bermedo Becerra died that day at 21:30 hours at the Lota Hospital due to an abdominal wound with perforation of the aorta, as certified by the Medical Death Certificate from the Legal Medical Institute.

According to witness statements, around 20:00 hours that day, four Gendarmerie officers from the Isla Santa María prison facility had an altercation with Angel Bermedo's father at his business premises because he refused to serve them.

Angel Bermedo, who was nearby, was alerted to what was happening, and as he headed to see his father, he encountered the gendarmes on the way and began an argument with them. They beat him and then took him to the beach, where they shot him. Several witnesses who saw what happened managed to subdue the perpetrator of the shots and hand him over to Carabineros.

According to the father's statements, the gendarmes involved accused him of being an extremist and hiding weapons, claiming that his son's death had occurred during a confrontation with uniformed personnel.

The judicial investigation initiated in the Lota Court to establish the circumstances of Angel Bermedo's death was referred due to lack of jurisdiction to the Military Prosecutor's Office of Concepción, where it could not be located.

The gendarme who fired the shots was transferred to the Lebu prison facility.

Considering the evidence gathered and the investigation conducted by this Corporation, the Superior Council reached the conviction that the death of Angel Román Bermedo Becerra was due to an abuse of power committed by a State agent who acted outside the scope of his duties and who was not sanctioned by judicial or administrative authorities.

By virtue of this, he was declared a victim of human rights violations.
